So Beyond Basic

Have you ever taken a class, learned a technique and got a little giddy?

That’s what happened to me. In my AECP Level 2 class “Beyond Basic Background there is a technique taught for creating PERFECT masks for resist watercolor painting. I had so much fun creating this card that I have already passed on the idea to several other people. Let me show you some of what I learned in this class.

In the class the instructor (tutor as she calls herself), went through some very easy steps to create a mask for your painting that will prevent bleeding from your watercolor and allow you to make a perfect mask. I used a coverplate die from Altenew called layered snowflake Plate A. I didn’t want snowflakes but loved the single die appearance. In the class the instructor die cut her plate die but had a few places that the die did not cut completely through and that is why I am adding the tip of using a metal plate for intricate dies. I am putting an image of my plate sammie for you below.

I also wanted a little sparkle (not too much because I didn’t want it to look like a Christmas Card) So I added a little bit of Mica powder (or micropearl) I have to tell you the water was so pretty I used it in the background of the above graphic. I can’t really give you the amounts because it would depend on how much of that pearl look you want. You can also add ultra fine glitter to your watercolor paints. Now it is best to use “tube” paint to add mixative to as that are more “accepting” to the additons. I also recently aquired the Artistry watercolor paints from Altenew and have been VERY happy with the texture and quality of these next level paints – I tend to be drawn to tube paints because of the abilty to mix different mediums in but pan paints work beautiful as well.

You may be asking, what do you mean, use your phone to help make your marker blends work better? Well photographing your work as you are coloring and changing the colors to black and white help you to see where your tint, tones and shadows are falling. This in turn helps you to know where to remove color or to add depth. It is a fool-proof way to make the blend of your markers flawless.

WAIT, Erika, you jsut said to blend flawlessly but now hard lines? I thought there was no such thing as hard lines in nature. That is crazy! If you look on the petals of the rose you will see I make the shadow heavier so it gave the appearance of an actual shadow of the petal. I did that by putting down a darker color mimicing the shapes of any of the images “above” the layer I was working on. See the leaf I circled, see how I made circular shadows to make sure the berries were represented? Yes, it’s that easy to bring a realistic feel to your image.

I am thinking of having a coloring class.. would you be interested in that? Let me know in the comments below.

Also if you are popping in here before April 13th 2024 and are interested in a free workshop you can email me and I will let you into the class group for the live presentation — After the 13th I will give you acess to the recorded live.

Have a fantasitc day. Stay tuned for more fun tips, tricks and classes!

Be Blessed!

So Shiny! Using Metallic Paints.

Sometimes, I think I am part crow, or really, just any bird. All the shiny things just pull me in. I just love how metallic paint adds that shiny beauty to just about any project. It seems to me metallic paint is a wonderful way to add just the right bling to a card. The problem I have is I am not a watercolor artist. That is why using this fun technique and some beautiful, in this case, floral stamps anyone can be a watercolor artist!

I am excited to share this fun techinque in another class available HERE over at the shop. Use this coupon code to get it for FREE! SSAECPEH

Here’s a peek at some of what you’ll find in the class.

I hope you enjoy the class, and be sure to leave a comment.

SOS Cards: Ink Solutions

HEY! The Craft Dash is going to have a new segment called SOS (Send Over Solutions) Cards

Have you ever had a beautiful card panel end up in the trash because you thought you messed it up? happened on this card!

Let’s start at the beginning, you have not seen the June 2023 Hero Arts, My Monthly Hero Kit you are missing out! You can check it out here. (June 2023 MMH Kit). It’s stunning! I couldn’t wait to try it out.

I created the watercolor background using the reactive inks that were included in the kit. (yummy). A project sheet for this card can be found on the RESOURCES Tab that will walk you through the entire process. Today we are focusing on the SOS

I used watercolor paper which was a bit rough and when I stamped it, the image would not clearly stamp. So after several attempts in my MISTI, I ended up with pock marks and I didn’t like it. So take a look at the quick video (my first try at it btw with my new software) to see how I corrected the issue.

Let me know what you think of this quickie video and check out the other pages on my blog. I will be uploading more SOS segments soon. If you have a card that is headed to the trash bin, STOP and send it to me. Go to the contact page and let’s see what we can do to add it to the SOS Line up!

Have a fantastic week! YouTube is still on the way. Baby steps my crafty friends! Be sure to like, share and subscribe. (I mean if you wanna, I would really appreciate it!)

It’s been busy but NEVER too busy

Oh boy, I have had a week. Lots happening in the last few days, but even in all the stresses of life and the craziness of having a family and pets and work and laundry and … I could do this all day. However, I must have downtime. In my downtime I read or create. The My Favorite Things Summer Camp 2021 session was a hoot. I got a late start, but I did manage to finish them all. I almost gave up because of all the extra duties I had to finish but the surest way to get me to finish something is to put it on a list…. so I did this in my creative journal.

DAY TWO: Watercoloring

For watercolor, I wanted to try something different. I got some of my black watercolor paper and

Day Two: Watercolor

embossed the Pretty Peony stamp in cream embossing powder then used my gem and opal water colors and I love how it came out.

I also finally had a place to use my fun dark gems.

DAY THREE: Emboss Resist

Day Three: Emboss Resist

I have emboss resist many things in my crafty life, and I love the way it looks. I really like that MFT video had us focus on the “elements” not just a background emboss resist. It was fun making these pumpkins with this method.

I also did the clouds just cause I was on a roll. The thing is, I discovered add texture on the pumpkins was really fun and easy. I just smaller blending brushes and pounced over the base colors to make each pumpkin unique

DAY FOUR: Background Bonanza

Day Four: Background Bonanza

I admit it didn’t come out as I expected but I really like it. I wanted to put a fun little teacher scene on this card, (this is for my sister, she’s a teacher and she is going back to the classroom to teach this year.) but it just didn’t show the fun alphabet. I cut them out three times and put them on the front of this card to give it some dimension.

A word to the wise: lay the letters out on the front of the card before you begin sticking them down. This helps to avoid running out of room or squishing the last few letters up.

I added the black over the “hi” as the sentiment. It really turned out fun. THe background was able to pop forward a bit and give support to the image I colored to look lke my cute sister.

This one was FUN! I knew just what I wanted to make. The wreath is actually from the Spring release with

DAY FIVE: Delightful Die Cutting

DAY FIVE: delightful Die Cut

This was a hoot to make because I knew just which die I wanted to use. It was from a spring release and the wreat was perfect. I used some white, sparlke blue and holographic papers to die cut the snowflakes and placed them all around then using some winter birds was a nice addition. The sentiment was too good to pass up. I did cut it to make it a stackable sentiment, but I really enjoyed making this one.

Now that Summer Camp 2021 is over I am so happy I took the time to complete all the projects. It was a wonderful relaxing time for me to sit back and remember there is so very much more to life than the busy crazy stuff. Making cards to send out to friends and family really is fulfilling for me.

Simply Watercolor Christmas

Yes, I am a forever student. I just began the Online Card Class Simply Watercolor Christmas. Yesterday was day one. Using the ideas from the instructors I completed two cards.

Watercolor Project #1 – Gift box
Watercolor Project #2 – Christmas Tree

While my cards are not my favorite, I did discover something fun in class. I love the way Kristina showed me how to get a more opaque look from the metallic paints. A couple things that I would point out.

  1. MAKE sure your paint is DRY before removing masking tape
  2. Burnish the side of the tape that will be holding back the watercolor
  3. Keep those pencil lines light and when possible, use water soluble pencil
  4. Don’t be afraid to experiment.

On my tree, I wanted to make a big star, but I wanted to highlight the paint not the die cutting. Because the sentiment is large, I decided to paint the star.

Problem: I am not so good at star painting. Like they are more than primitive stars more like toddler star.

Solution. I die cut a star from masking tape. My original though was to use it as a mask, but I couldn’t use the negative space because it was so thin on one side and I didn’t think the tape would hold the watercolor back. (There was other stuff on the die cut).

Second Solution: I used the positive edge of the star placed it over the tree, and outlined it very carefully with the gold paint. Removed the tape and then filled in the star. It work wonderfully!

Something I love about taking classes, they make me think. I must not fall back on my comfortable way of doing things. That star is my happy for this first class. I love how it looks on that tree! It really was the finishing touch.

Stay tuned for more projects.
